Dynamics 365 Business Central - Page Part Terms - Updated for 2024 Q4

Something that I am always keen to engage with on projects is the business language. It's very important to understand the industry specific terms an organisation uses, one of the major benefits of having worked as an end-user in any given industry is familiarity with the terminology.

This also works in reverse, it's vital from an early point in any project to bring clarity on the terminology used for the D365 BC user interface. Getting new users of BC used to the terms used in BC is important for a number of reasons.

  • Understanding what an action or item may do
  • Finding pages within the app
  • Finding help about said pages
  • Understanding dialogs, like error messages
  • Fostering a common language with the delivery team present & future
So while it's on the consultants to pick up all the industry-specific language for a client, I always strongly encourage everyone on a project to use the BC terminology when talking about BC to help avoid miscommunications and frustrations. You also spend a good deal of time on screen shares, so having a common set of terms for all the actions on the page is a real time-saver!

Here is what ChatGPT had to say about "Why is common terminology and language important on an ERP delivery project?"

In an ERP delivery project, the importance of common terminology and language cannot be overstated. It serves as the backbone of effective communication, collaboration, and implementation. By establishing a shared linguistic framework, organizations can mitigate risks, enhance efficiency, and increase the likelihood of a successful ERP deployment. Investing time early in the project to align on terminology pays significant dividends throughout the implementation and beyond.

Here are a few slides I use in training sessions to cover all the names of the page parts - hopefully a handy reference - updated for 2024 Q4!
